Without diving too much into each section, here are two high-level concepts the book discusses.
Let’s say your day job is in marketing. You love the field and are always looking for new ways to learn more about the craft.
A great way to learn is from people more experienced than yourself, right? The problem is if you just randomly reach out to senior marketers for mentorship, you may get turned down.
In fact, a lot of them probably won’t even respond to your request.
...but what if you invite them onto your podcast?
That changes things.
First, you’re more likely to get a positive response. You’re helping them market themselves, plus you’re flattering them.
Second, it opens the door for dialogue. Rather than shooting a few emails back and forth, you get to actually hear their voice and talk live. You get to connect with them better.
Third, it helps you build an asset. Your podcast is something that can live on (theoretically) forever in the digital world. You can leverage this asset later to get a job, promotion, build a business, etc.
Fourth, you connect with a VIP in your industry. That may lead to a great job down the road.
This aspect of how podcast can open new doors is one of my favorite parts of the book.
Most of us have this little voice in our heads telling us who we are. It’s based on decades of experiences and our environment.
The problem is that little voice is wrong.
At least, it can be wrong.
For example, for most of my life I’ve considered myself as a shy person. I didn’t actively pursue conversations with strangers. I preferred to only talk to people I already knew pretty well.
When I started podcasting, that belief about myself began to change. I didn’t have to be the shy person I thought I was on a podcast. I could be whoever I wanted to be.
Over time, that change in behavior also changed my thinking. I no longer see myself as someone who has to be shy and quiet.
Simply by learning how to build a podcast, you as a person will change for the better.
My book has eight chapters, all focused on how podcasting can help you become more successful in all aspects of your life.
